#126 LIZZIE LASATER- Overcoming restorative yoga misconceptions
Lizzie Lasater teaches creativity, functional movement, somatic strength, and Restorative Yoga.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in Art History from UCLA and a Master’s in Design from Columbia University in New York City.
Lizzie jokes that she has been practicing since the womb because her mother, Judith Hanson Lasater, has taught yoga since 1971. Honoring her lineage while embracing contemporary movement science, Lizzie shares the powerful insights of yoga across the web, refining the practice to better serve women’s bodies and to teach people, not just poses. @lizzie.lasater

NOTABLE QUOTES
“I want them to be familiar with and be able to tolerate silence… to understand that there is a time in the rhythm of my day that is not focused on them, but on myself.” - on doing a self practice with children
“My rule, especially when they were little, was really clear—no touching me and no talking. And shockingly, they were able to coexist with me in silence.” - on doing a self practice with children
“What is an advanced yoga pose? Maybe it’s sitting and having one breath of presence.”
“You can’t do yoga without a body, but yoga is not about the body. And that’s so hard to communicate—even to ourselves.”
“Many long-time yoga teachers end up needing joint repair surgery. Maybe, just maybe, we are not serving our physical bodies the way we think we are.”
“I think the first victory of quiet practices is noticing your own agitation.”
“People believe they don’t deserve rest. They tell themselves, ‘I don’t have time.’ But if you don’t have 20 minutes to rest, then you probably need it even more.”
“When yoga came to the West, we saw it through a Western lens—Sun Salutations looked like doing something, so we kept them. Shavasana looked like nothing, so we dropped it.”
“In a capitalist model, the customer is always right. But yoga isn’t about giving people what they want—it’s about giving them what they need.”
